HIGH – Instantly becomes a hit with the Real fans and scores five times in first 16 matches.

LOW – April 2004: his affair with personal assistant Rebecca Loos is revealed. Tabloid frenzy.

LOW – Euro 2004: Beckham is among those who miss penalties as England lose shoot-out to Portugal and go out in the quarter finals.

LOW – July 2004: An intruder scales the walls of his home carrying a petrol can while Victoria and their children were in. Security guards apprehend the man before he gets to the house.

LOW – October 9 2004: Controversially admits intentionally fouling Ben Thatcher in a England/ Wales friendly. The yellow card he received gave him a suspension coincided with a game he was going to miss through injury anyway.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter says he is astonished by Beckham’s admission and “disappointed with his behaviour”.

LOW – 2005/6 Real Madrid season: Team finishes disappointing second to Barcelona with a 12 point gap.

HIGH– World Cup 2006: Beckham’s free kick leads to own goal in opening match against Paraguay. The goal is the only one of the game.

He also scores the only goal in the second round game against Ecuador.

LOW– World Cup 2006: England crash out of the World Cup on penalties to Portugal in the quarter finals. Beckham substituted off before the end of the game.

Beckham resigns as England captain after criticism of his performance during the tournament.

LOW – 2006/7 Real Madrid season: Out of favour with coach Fabio Capello. Starts only a few games.

LOW – January 10 2007: Real Madrid announce Beckham will be leaving in the summer.
